Antique Victorian Mourning Brooch, Rose Cameo High Relief Design
Antique Brooch circa 1860 + when mourning jewellery became the height of fashion following the death of Queen Victoria's husband Albert, Prince Consort. Featuring a cameo style high relief floral design of a rose, bud and foliage on an oval base with a twisted rope style border.
Vulcanite is a man made material invented in the early 19th Century, it could simulate carved Whitby Jet which was the more costly material used to make these pieces.
The brooch is in very good condition for it's age, just some minor markings to the reverse and a slight bend to the pin- clasp in good secure order.
This piece would make a wonderful gift for collectors of 19th Century Jewellery, and lovers of Gothic style and Victorian accessories .
Please see all photographs for close ups and different views- they are extreme close ups & will show any surface marks very clearly not immediately visible to the naked eye .
